Christmas In Brooklyn - Erik Frandsen

I Love This City

I’ve said it before. I love living in New York City.

On Thursday I was in Columbus Park in Brooklyn. There were two musicians,  A singer and a guitarist/percussion/singer, playing some good soul music by Sam Cooke, Teddy Pendergrass, The Temptations and others.

The guitarist was sitting on a suitcase that he was using as a bass drum. He had another kick peddle that was attached to a snare drum.

I was hanging out for about 20 -30 minutes and a good crowd had gathered. They then went into My Girl and everyone started singing and dancing along.

Two people even got up to the mic and joined in.

It put a smile on my face.

The kid with the backpack was wearing this Beastie Boys t-shirt.

I’ve talked about  Vox Pop on here before. Its a small coffee shop that has music almost every night of the week in Ditmas Park, Brooklyn. I was hanging out there last night.
To change things up a bit these quotes come from the bands themselves.
The Young Dads, a duo consisting of Jesse Andrews on bass and vocals and Micah Shapiro on cajón and vocals played. Micah introduced a song by saying:

This song is about a date me and Jesse went on. A Canadian doubles date.”

Also performing at Vox Pop tonight was a band from Vassar college called The Facts and Figures.  In between songs the lead singer said:

Do the guitars need to be louder? Our amps go to eleven.”

The Plastic Ono Band, featuring Yoko Ono played the Howard Gilman Opera House at TheBrooklyn Academy of Music on February 15th and 16th. The 16th show sold out immediately so they added a dress rehearsal performance on the 15th, which I attended. Wasn’t really sure what to expect. At times it was a little strange but all in all it was a  great night of music and something like I’ve never seen. Yoko’s band was great. I wish I was able to attend the 16th because the line up was crazy featuring special guests Eric Clapton, Paul Simon to name a couple.

“Shake it Yoko. Shake it.”

Sitting next to me were two women. One of them climbed over the seat to get out and then climb over it again to get back it.

She said: “Do you think this is gong to be easier or worse.”
Friend: “I don’t know. You’re the one with the long legs”

Musician: David ByrneVenue: Prospect Park BandshellCity: New YorkState: NYDate: 6/8/09
The summer concert season is officially upon us. Tonight Celebrate Brooklyn kicked off its free summer concert series with David Byrne. I got to the park around 8:00, just before the show was about to start. There was a huge line that looked like it went on for ever.
I heard these while waiting on line:

Man: “This is the most f-ed up line ever. It goes in like four circles.” (This person really said “f-ed”)
_____________________________________________
Woman: “This is like the craziest thing I’ve ever seen. I need to take a picture.”

Eventually, we were told that the Bandshell was to capacity and we could go sit on the lawn. I didn’t have many options so I just went to the first available patch of grass I could see. There was pretty much no view of the stage. All we had to see was a screen. Somebody standing behind me with the same view said:

Man: “We got the VIP seats here. Look you can see everything.”
