Overheard at Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers

Event Name: Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers and My Morning Jacket
Venue: IZOD Center
City: East Rutherford
State: NJ
Date: 8/24/10

The last time I made it out to The IZOD center at the Meadowlands was for The Dead in April 2009. At the time the only way to get there by public transportation was to take a train and shuttle bus.  You can now taken the 351 Coach USA Express which gets you to the Meadowlands in about 20 minutes. So much easier and only costs $10 round trip.

On the bus:

Woman (to friend on bus) : Do you have the concert tickets?

It was a really fun show. Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers played a solid hour and a half set packed with all the favorites, some I didn’t know and a handful of tunes from the new album Mojo. I don’t think I looked down at my watch once!

There was a lot of tailgating before and after the show. On my walk through the lot to the bus at the end of the night:

Guy: Who has my pretzel? There are usually like 20 pretzel guys out here!

Funny quote from Titian on our way back from Gathering of the Vibes late last night:

“I wonder if Jesus would have liked frappucinos. I bet Jesus would have been at the Vibes. I mean, where the f**k else would he have been?”

I posted something on here the other day that I started this blog on wordpress. When I was on wordpress it was hard to know if anyone was reading. Tumblr has opened things up and gives me so many more possibilities. So much better. I love the community aspect of tumblr. Thanks for following!

I would love for Overheard: Live In Concert to be a collaboration. I know that there are people on tumblr that are just as passionate about music and concerts as I am. I want to hear from you!

Have a memorable concert story? Ever been to a concert where you heard something outrageous, funny, crazy, random, weird or just out of the ordinary? Have a great concert photo? Submit it!

John died again.

  1. my friend Cristina: I think I'll sing the Beatles for the "concert"!
  2. me: Come together, right?
  3. Cristina: yes, but I'm not sure about it.
  4. me: WHY NOT! You're really good at singing it.
  5. Cristina: It's because I dreamed that John Lennon came in the room while I was singing and said "WHY? WHY?" and died again.
  6. me: OMG. Maybe you should stop before you could kill Paul for real.

Event Name: The Allman BrothersVenue: The United Palace TheaterCity: New YorkState: NYDate: 3/20/10
Since 1989  The Allman Brothers have graced the Beacon Theatre stage for a string of shows every March. That changed this year when they had to relocate up town to The United Palace Theater. The United Palace Theater began as a movie house and is now a church by day and music venue by night. An interesting combination but it makes for a good show. The sound quality is pretty darn good.
Being the last night of the March run everyone was pretty pumped.
When getting into the lobby:
Concert Goer: “Allman Brothers!”
Concert Goer Friend: “I thought I was here to see Miley Cyrus.”
I was sitting in the balcony and had a perfect view of the stage until the guy sitting next to me said:
Concert Goer: “One asshole always stands up.”
When exiting I had a brief conversation that went something like this:
Tourist Concert Goer: “I’m in New York. That’s all I know.”
Locale Concert Goer: “This is The Heights.”
Me: “I came from Brooklyn. It took me forever to get here.”
Locale Concert Goer: “This isn’t Brooklyn. This isn’t New York. It’s The Heights!”
